Making Your Video Productions Great

What makes a great video? Well, a great production right?! Yes, that’s a big part of it, however, lots of things go into making a video great. A great video usually starts with intentional pre-production or planning. Then, a clear and focused production based on the planning that came before. Finally, a series of decision-making through cutting up and rearranging, or editing the content that was captured into the final video. This is called post-production. I know, it sounds like a lot, and it can be, but whether your video’s message is simple or complex, learning and applying the steps necessary to make a great video will guarantee an impact on your audience.

Let’s start with pre-production. Pre-production may consist of storyboarding, pre-interviews, scripting, concept art, location scouting, or creating a shot list. The ultimate goal with pre-production is to ensure everybody is on the same page about what the core message should be and to help visualize the contents of the video. Great pre-production will also provide more freedom for creative decisions at the time of the video shoot as opposed to scrambling to figure out simple logistics while shooting.

Lights, camera, action! Most everyone knows this phrase and phase of production. Shooting is often the most exciting part of creating a video because the vision is now being realized and the effort that is put in at this step produces the material or actual footage of the video. When shooting, it’s important to frequently refer to your pre-production planning to stay focused on capturing what is needed for the final video. Shooting often requires the most physical and expensive resources, including people, so a careful yet efficient pace is key.

After the video is shot, the hard work is done, right? Wrong. It’s time for post-production. What is done at this phase could minimize or maximize the efficacy of what was captured during production. Through the use of sound design, music, voice-over, effects, transitions, graphics, color grading, and many other tools, you can assemble all the work that has been done leading up to this. With that being said, it is not always necessary to use every tool available but to understand and use the tools that will best support the message that is trying to be conveyed.

This has been a birds-eye view of what it takes to make a great video. It is a goal of mine to educate and inspire others to tell their stories through the medium of video production.
